INTERNATIONAL
WOMEN’S DAY
“A successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with
the bricks others have thrown at her.”
The International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8th
March, 2016. The ceremony started at 2:30 pm in Vel MuruganAutitorium. International
Women’s Day reflects women’s progress made in the
history. Women are the symbol of positivity, courage and determination which
makes them extra ordinary. They are the ones who have made exceptional
contributions in building a society. The 2016 theme for International Women’s
Day is “Step It Up for Gender Equality”. Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic,
cultural and political achievement.
The function was presided over by Dr. R. Thara, Director Mental Health Centre, SCARF
.The other dignitaries present includes Founder Chancellor and President Col. Prof.
Dr. Vel R. Rangarajan, Foundress Lady President,
Dr.Sagunthala Rangarajan, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Beela Satyanarayana, Pro. Vice
Chancellor, Dr. U. Chandrasekharan, Chief Guest for the day, Dr. R. Thara,
Director Mental Health Centre, SCARF, Registrar, Dr. E. Kannan, Director
Academics, Dr. A. Koteeswara Rao, Director R and D, Dr. P. Sarasu, Director
International Academic Quality, Dr. A. Abhudahir, Controller of Examination,
Dr. V. Thangaraj. The function was attended by the Lady faculty, staff and
students of Vel Tech University.
In the inaugural speech
the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Beela Satyanarayana spoke about the
importance of empowering the women of India.
A Memorandum of
Understanding was signed between Vel Tech Dr. R. R and Dr. S. R Technical
University, Avadi and Schizophrenia Research Institution, Anna Nagar Extension,
Chennai. The MoU covers the provision of counselling services by SCARF to
students of Vel Tech University. MoU also states that a counsellor from SCARF
will counsel the students every fortnight at the Vel Tech University campus for
a whole day (10:00 am to 4:00 pm)
Dr. R. Thara, Director Mental Health
Centre, SCARF gave a presentation on Women’s Mental Health. She spoke about the various
psychiatric disorders, the warning signs of disorders and the different mental
health strategies to prevent the illnesses.
At the end of the presentation, time was
provided for the students and staff to ask questions and clear their doubts.
The programme was a good learning experience for the staff and students.
The programme ended with vote of thanks
delivered by Ms. M. Kavitha, Associate Professor, CSE Department.
